Deirdre Malone Westgate
Dear Family of Stella Marjorie King MacDonald,
In searching my ancestry, I discovered Stella, sadly too late to become acquainted with her, by virtue of her being named for her mother, Stella Marjorie King MacDonald. Stella Marjorie King MacDonald (mother) born in 1903 in Aden, was step-sister to my father, Martin Charles Malone, born 1906 in Cork, Eire.
She was a great friend to my father when she looked after him in the early 1920's when he was a troubled teenager seeking to go to America. She hid him for a while in Southampton, then gave him enough money to get him started and an address of friends who would look after him. He finally settled in Williamsburg, Virginia in the early 1950's, and died in 1997.
I myself was born in 1940, and am therefore the same generation as your dear Stella. My cousin Peter Malone, who resides in Bath, Somerset, England, has done extensive research attempting to locate information about our ancestors. It was Peter who discovered Stella's name, and who is keen, as am I, to be in touch with her American family. His own father, Leonard Malone, was named after Stella's grandfather Leonard Burrows King. If any one of you wishes to exchange emails in hopes of learning more about our shared families, both Peter and I would be very glad to engage in a correspondence. My name is Deirdre Malone Westgate, now residing in Normandy, but having grown up in Tidewater, Virginia, I have fond memories of the Chesapeake Bay: [email protected]. Peter Malone's email: [email protected]. Sharing any photos of ancestors would be amazing.
I include an email that Peter sent to Lasting Tributes, hoping it would be passed on to you: "A couple of days ago I entered the name Stella Marjorie King on Google. What came up was that same name with the addition of McDonald whose dates are 18th May 1946 to 8th February 2019. I believe that you dealt with the funeral arrangements. The Stella Marjorie King for whom I was looking was born 1903 at Aden (Yemen) to Martha Jane and Leonard Burrows King. After the death of Martha in 1907 at Poona (now Pune) LBK married my great grandmother Georgina Malone. There was no issue from this marriage but Georgina had six from her first marriage, all grown up by then. Stella married a Robert McDonald and died 2nd quarter 1946, a date that matches the birth of SMKMc (excuse my use of initials). I note from a local newspaper obituary for her that she came from England. I am therefor fairly sure that she was the granddaughter of Leonard Burrows King and daughter of Stella Marjorie King."
We are very sad not to have discovered your dear Stella during her lifetime, but hope that we might make contact with you in her memory, and that of her Mum.
Sincerely,
Deirdre Malone Westgate
