I worked with Sam at Singer-Link from 1977-1984. The “Program Office” for simulators for the engine control room and electrical systems for the DD-963 Spruance class destroyers consisted of Pete Kolosky (Program Manager), Sam (Program Engineer), myself (Program Administrator), and various secretaries. Sam was a talented engineer who ensured that the simulators were built on-schedule and according to the specs. We were a good team that provided a good product to the Navy and made a profit for Singer-Link. I only saw Sam a couple of times since 1984 at various Link reunions, and he was always the same cheerful and optimistic personality that I worked with for several years. I didn’t really know Sam outside of work but was very impressed that he took such an interest in ballroom dancing in his 50s; he was very energetic!
Here’s a funny memory about Sam. Pete Kolosky loved golf and incorporated golf into many business trips to Florida. For several years, Pete would schedule meetings with the customer during the Bay Hill Classic in Orlando so that he could go to the tournament. Naturally, Sam would be part of the team on most of these trips (although I was not). At the tournament, Sam started following pro-golfer Morris Hatalsky. Hatalsky was playing poorly and Sam made a comment to him at some point. Whatever transpired, Hatalsky had a disastrous round and did poorly at the tournament. The following year, when Hatalsky saw Sam following him again, he got very upset and again played poorly. Who knows what power Sam had over this golfer…..This story became part of the folklore of the Link golfers!
Though I have not seen Sam in many, many years, I am confident that he was a wonderful father, grandfather, great grandfather and family figure. His almost 93 years on this earth had to have been a life well lived, and I believe the family’s grieving will be short lived when considering their great memories of Sam. Rest in peace, Sam.
