Rick Schaefer's Obituary
Mr. Richard Kenneth Schaefer, 50, of Annapolis, MD, passed away on Friday, December 20, 2013 at the home of his sister, Katharine A. Babashan, of Frederick, MD.
Born January 20, 1963 in Islip, NY, Richard (Rick) was the son of Richard H. Schaefer of Bethesda, MD, and Carol A. Schaefer of Frederick, MD, and the stepson of Ann T. Schaefer of Bethesda, MD. He was a 1981 graduate of Damascus High School in Damascus, MD, and a 1986 graduate of Frostburg University in Frostburg, MD. Rick had a lengthy career as a Fishery Biologist with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
Rick was an outdoorsman; he loved to hunt and fish. He was also a sports enthusiast, both coaching and cheering for his adopted youth baseball and soccer teams. True to his New York roots, he was a consummate Yankees and Giants fan. Rick was also an outstanding gardener and a great cook, particularly for meals involving fish and game.
In addition to the family listed above, he is survived by his two children, Richard “Will” W. Schaefer of Annapolis, MD, and Carolyn M. Schaefer of Chestertown, MD, his former wife, Teresa M. Schaefer of Chestertown, MD, a brother-in-law, Mitchell Babashan of Frederick, MD; a niece, Kelly Babashan, and nephew, Mitchell Babashan II, both of Frederick, MD, his estranged wife, Martha G. Paz of Miami, FL and other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p. m. on Saturday, January 4, 2014, at Lasting Tributes Cremation & Funeral Care, 814 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD, 21401. The family will welcome guests an hour before the ceremony, and at a reception following.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Valley Forge Military College (VFMC) in memory of Richard Schaefer at 1001 Eagle Rd. Wayne, PA 19087-3695, or the Hospice of Frederick County PO Box 1799 Frederick, MD 21702.
A special fund for VFMC is being established in Rick’s honor. Checks made out to “Valley Forge Military College”, may be sent to the funeral home, or brought to his memorial service on January 4.
