Richard Callis Myers' Obituary
Richard Callis Myers, known to his friends as Dick, past away on Wednesday, January 22nd in his home on Kent Island Maryland at the age of 80. Dick died of pulmonary fibrosis, likely caused by long-term use of antibiotics. At the time of death he was surrounded by his family, wife Rita, son Rick and daughter Kristin. Placed in Hospice care earlier that week, Dick was provided round the clock help and support during his last days.
Dick was born in Vicksburg Mississippi on Aug 25, 1933 to father, Lt. Col Jesse David Myers and mother, Minnie Grace Callis-Myers. Dick was the third child of six. During the depression, Dick lived in Ft Peck Montana and then moved to Cheverly Maryland. Dick attended Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington DC, and later moved to Brian’s Road Maryland where he graduated Valedictorian in 1951 from Lackey High School, Indian Head Maryland.
Dick entered the Air Force in January of 1952 and served in the occupation forces in Europe. Although stationed in Germany, he often traveled to England. On one such trip, while attending the Lyceum Theatre dance hall, he met a 17 year old girl from Hackney, Rita Hopkinson. It was love at first sight, and the pair married two years later, April 14 1956, in Bryans Road Maryland (58 years in April).
Dick worked as a grocery checker while attending school to become an Accountant. After several jobs and an attempt at an Italian restaurant business, Dick became an owner and President of “Colonial Moving and Storage Co.”. His firm serviced many prestigious clients including the World Bank; and it provided employment for dozens of people. Dick was also President of National Moving and Storage Association in 1996. With his wife Rita, Dick traveled the world for his company making many life long friends.
Dick was an avid golfer and enjoyed sports of all kinds. In his lifetime he was a season ticket holder for the Redskins, Maryland, and Navy football. He also had a passion for flying and had a private, IFR and commercial pilot license.
Dick was an honest honorable man and will be greatly missed by his friends and family. Dick will be buried in Arlington National Commentary in the family plot. He is survived by his wife Rita Florence Hopkinson-Myers, two children, Richard Daniel Myers of Kent Island Md and Kristin Michelle Myers of Crofton Md and six grandchildren, Jonathan Myers, Crofton Md, Derek Jesse Myers, Arlington Va, Gregory Arthur Myers, Severna Park Md, Bret Pedersen, Crofton Md. Scott Richard Myers attending East Carolina University, NC, and Heather Pederson, Crofton Md.
A celebration of Dicks' life will be held at 2pm on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Lasting Tributes Cremation & Funeral Care 814 Bestgate Rd. Annapolis, MD. A gathering will follow until 4pm. Internment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
