Leroy Hurbert Prince's Obituary
Mr. Leroy Hubert Prince, lovingly known as "Chicken George," passed away on May 11, 2026, in Silver Spring, Maryland, at the age of 71. Born on July 6, 1954, in Guyana, to the late Silvia Parkins and Laurel Prince. Leroy lived a life marked by hard work, generosity, and an enduring love for his family and friends.
Leroy grew up in Linden, Guyana, where he attended St. Aidan’s Anglican School through the 12th grade. After completing his education, he trained at the Government Technical Institute in Georgetown and spent five years working at Guymine in McKenzie, repairing machinery with skill and dedication. In 1978, Leroy immigrated to the United States to begin a new chapter of his life. He embarked on a long and successful career as a maintenance technician, working for nearly three decades in small housing communities. Known for his expertise in painting, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical work, Leroy earned a reputation for being reliable and skilled. His willingness to help others extended beyond his professional life; he often lent his talents to family and friends, sometimes accepting nothing more than a plate of food especially if it was chicken. This love of chicken earned him the affectionate nickname "Chicken George."
Upon pursuing his skill set as a carpenter, he met Patricia Godfrey whom he married and had two beautiful daughters, namely, Odetta and Jewel Prince. Throughout their years of parenting Leroy and Patricia remained good friends.
In 2009 Leroy began to experience health challenges. Despite the difficulties his health challenges brought upon him he kept his enthusiasm about life. With his sense of humor and enduring spirit others always found themselves being inspired when in his presence. This display of warmth and affection was pertinent to him in nurturing his relationship with his love ones.
Family was at the heart of Leroy’s life. He is survived by his three beloved daughters: Odetta Prince-Fowler, Jewel Prince-Pryor, and Ashley Parkinson-Gaye. They were the light of his life and brought him immense joy. He also welcomed three sons-in-law into his family: Gregory Pryor, James Fowler, and Pa Alieu Gaye. Leroy adored his grandchildren—Tirrell, Abigail, Isabella Rose, Rashad, and Hassan—and cherished every moment. Leroy is also survived by his brother, Laurel Prince II; his sisters, Lauris Prince-Schroeter and Lena Prince-Nchako; nieces Dr. Tasha Hawthorne and Chantal Nchako; nephews Laurel III, Lennox, Catlin, Colin, and Sebastian; great-nieces Isabella Grace, Haviland, Hayden, and Miracle; great-nephew Jekhi; great- granddaughter Tereign; brother-in-law Bill Schroter; nephew-in-law Dr. Jeffrey Tanner; and his favorite cousin Desiree Campbell. Leroy had deep connections and a lasting love for each of them. His love extended beyond family, touching many close friends (Monty, Barry, Stumpy, Mervin, Cheryl, Carol, Derrick and many others) whose lives were forever changed by knowing him. His friendships were filled with laughter and genuine conversations.
May Leroy’s memory bring comfort to all who loved him as we honor his life.
