Joseph Francis Powers Jr.'s Obituary
Joseph F. Powers Jr, 73, of Riva, MD, died July 20, 2017, at home, of metastatic lung cancer under Hospice care.
He leaves his wife of 49 ½ years, Margaret “Margie” Montague Powers; his sisters Jacqueline Kelly (Jim) of West Hyannisport, MA, and Lianne Abramo of West Dennis, MA; and a brother, Michael Powers of South Boston, MA; also 6 nephews and 1 niece.
Joe was born in Melrose, MA to Joseph F. Powers and Agnes Ahern Powers. He attended St. Marys Grammar School and graduated from Malden Catholic HS in 1962. He received a National Merit Scholarship to Michigan State University and graduated in 1967 with a BS in Psychology. He was a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. He attended graduate school at University of Michigan and graduated in 1975 with a Masters in Public Policy.
He served 5 ½ years as an officer in the US Air Force.
He was employed by the USEPA for 25 years, retiring in 1999.
After retirement he and Margie cruised on their sailboat SV AQUAVIT along the East Coast and the Bahamas for 5 years. After selling the boat they became “CLODS” (cruisers living on dirt) and met weekly for breakfast at Chick and Ruths Deli in Annapolis.
He was a lifelong liberal Democrat who loved politics, reading political blogs, the Washington Post, and the New York Times.
At his request there will be no services and he will be buried in the Crownsville Veterans Cemetery.
