My Thoughts and prayers are with you Margie!
Old sailors never die -they just get a little dingy !!!
Our enjoyment of Joe's friendship centered around our love of sailboat cruising on the Chesapeake and to the Bahamas . We made one non-stop crossing from Miami to Nassau one January - something neither of us had tried before as most of the 24 to 30 hr trip would be in darkness with no land/lights to be seen....This was a real challenge for these 2 Chesapeake Bay Sailboats and crews. All seemed under control (never a good sign on a sailboat at night). When Joe came on the VHF radio sometime in late evening and asked a simple if scary question ... "Should I be seeing only 6 feet of water under the keel?" Having make this crossing before (but always in day light) I was able to tell Joe we had to cross one shallow bar and should soon be back in 10 ft of water (not a lot but expected in the Bahamas). I quickly checked my depth gauge and GPS/Map and found all was well. The rest of that crossing was uneventful except the need to dodge a couple sailboats that were anchored right on the route and displaying lights that meant they were underway . The lack of other chatter on the VHF that night gave us hope that most crossing boats had figured out what was happening - could have been real messy.
While the crews of both Aquavette and Knockatoone have long since "swallowed the anchor" and moved ashore, we will always have great memories of our time with Joe and Margie on the water....
Where is my dingy ? I knw I left it here somewhere ... :-)
