George Hopkins' Obituary
R. George Hopkins of Crownsville died on December 6, 2011. Born in Elkton, MD on March 2, 1950, and raised in Betterton, MD, Mr. Hopkins was the son of Ray Gowman Hopkins and Julia Curlett. He graduated from Chestertown High School Class of 1970. Mr. Hopkins attended McAllister Institute of Mortuary Science in NY City, graduating in 1971. He served his apprenticeship at Singleton Funeral Home in Glen Burnie, MD, where he worked as funeral director after completing his training. He married Sandra May Lusby of Kennedyville, MD in 1973. In 1992, Mr. Hopkins purchased the Singleton Funeral Home along with his equal partner. While taking down Christmas decorations on January 6, 2008, Mr. Hopkins suffered a traumatic brain injury and sold his half of the business in 2010.
During his career, Mr. Hopkins was a member of the Maryland State Funeral Directors Association, serving through the chairmanships and as president in 1997-1998. He was also a member of the National Funeral Directors Association. Mr. Hopkins was an active member of the Glen Burnie Lions Club, where he served as president and in many chairmanships. He was also active in the Glen Burnie Improvement Association and helped each year at the Glen Burnie Carnival.
Mr. Hopkins loved Christmas, and won numerous holiday decorating contests with his outdoor house decoration, which included train displays. He also won awards for the most decorated house in Anne Arundel County.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Lusby Hopkins of Crownsville; his daughter, Martha M. Sidlowski and son in-law, Michael Sidlowski of Severn, MD; granddaughters, Julie and Lauren Sidlowski; sister, Patricia Schuyler of Denton, MD; and mother in-law, Harriett Lusby of Kennedyville.
Friends may call at the Lasting Tributes Cremation & Funeral Care by Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., 814 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD on Thursday, December 8 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm.
A funeral will be held at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 1110 St. Stephen’s Church Road, Crownsville, MD 21032 on Friday, December 9 at 11:00 am.
