Eugene Walker's Obituary
Eugene Walker was born to the late Willie and Lucile Walker in Norfolk, Virginia on May 20, 1936. On the morning of Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at home in Waldorf, Maryland, he entered eternal life at the age of 75.
“Gene” as he was affectionately called was educated in the Norfolk Public School System. Upon graduating from high school, he joined the United States Army. He served as a Weatherman while stationed at the Research and Development Division, White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. He was a Senior Chief Instructor of the ROTC program at Indiana Institute of Technology, Ft. Wayne, Indiana. While attending the United States Sergeant Major Academy, he completed his Bachelor of Science degree.
After twenty-seven years and numerous decorations, medals, badges, citations and ribbons, Gene finally decided to retire as a Command Sergeant Major. Following his honorable discharge, he was employed in the field of Finance and Management in the Washington, D.C. area. He retired as the Vice President of a mortgage company.
On September 17, 1986, Eugene married his long-time friend, Barbara R. Walker. This union combined two families and instantly gave him adoring grandchildren. He was instrumental in raising four of these grandchild; Kenya, Chanda, Ebony and Keenan. These grandchildren brought great joy to him.
Shortly after his marriage to Barbara, he became an active member of Cecil Memorial United Methodist Church. Gene has served diligently on the Board of Trustees, Finance Committee, the United Methodist Men, Administrative Council, the Male Ushers, Willing Workers, and Missions, and cannot forget the Male Choir.
He was really faithful working at Cecil’s Food Bank.
For many family and friends, Gene was their “Mr. Fix-it”. If he heard anyone say that their appliances were broken, that they need to build or put something together, he was there.
Gene was a devoted Washington Redskins fan. On any given Sunday, whether he was at home, visiting friends or at church, he could be found in front of the television. Sometimes, he would yell at the television so loud, that you would have thought that he was actually being paid to coach. Yet, if they were losing, he would sit as quiet as a mouse.
Truly, Jamesia and Keiana were the light of his eyes. As a devoted grandfather, Gene be could be found at all dance competitions, whether it was in Myrtle Beach, SC, Woodbridge, VA, or Baltimore, MD. Wherever Jamesia and Keiana had to dance, he was there. He attended school every school activity until his health failed. He was a very supportive grandfather to Jamesia and Keiana.
He leaves to cherish his memory of his wife of twenty-six years, Barbara R. Walker; six children, Tasha N. Walker Smith (Odell), Robert “Billy” W. Johnson, Jr., Wendell F. Johnson, Leonard B. Johnson, Charmaine D. Johnson, and Charlene P. Johnson; nine grandchildren, Kenya Y. Poindexter (Jammie), Keenan Bolden, Chanda DeVillassee (Charnier), Ebony Smith (Derek), Aja Johnson, Myles Smith, Kamika Mucker (Corey), Damien Johnson, and Gina Johnson; fifteen great-grandchildren; five sisters, Millie Edwards, Donna Ray Jones, Mary Ann Walker, Marie Butts, and Sarah Banks; brother-in-law, Jerry Tongue; sister-in-law, Rose Marie Allen (Marvin); and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives, friends, including Preston R. Vauls, Jr. and Howard C. Bias Sr., and canine companion, Kaprie.

Burial will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
