Yesterday, we celebrated Eileen's life. We laughed, we cried, we kissed two bottles of Whiskey goodbye. Today we are left with the memories, which if you knew Eileen are as abundant as the sands on the beach. Go softly my darling into that goodnight, your spirit burns brightly in the hearts of those who knew and loved you. You have brightened our lives and we will be forever grateful. I believe we will meet again. Thank you for giving me shelter from the storm.
Eileen entered my life at a time when we were all young, anti-war, courageous, in love and so optimistic about life. She was so full of life, and so very very real in everything she did. You could sit down with Eileen and talk forever about everything. We shared being from a big family, struggling with our relationships, and learning how to wend our way through the crazy times we faced. I loved you Eileen and yet I let time slip away without seeing you...I see your crazy happy smile and it makes me want to smile again for all the joy you brought to all of us....Love, Janis (McDonald)
There are so many memories of Eileen it is hard to pick one favorite. Where do I begin.... Her infectious laugh, her kindness and thoughtfulness for others, her concern for those in need, her love of books and the theater, her impersonations of Barbara Streisand, her beautiful spirit, staying up all night playing cards, the Friday Afternoon Club, the birthday pin and many, many more. My favorite memory of Eileen is the day that we stood together at Union Station and watched our friend Noreen head off for new adventures in San Francisco. We put up a good front as the train pulled out of the stations. Then, Eileen and I headed to the Dubliner where we spent hours sharing memories, stories, and tears.
It's hard to imagine anyone better to share such a moment with. Eileen always exuded kindness, caring and a big heart.
For over 30 years Eileen and I have been friends and fellow “conspirators” in life. I think it is fitting that my first memories of her are of intensely organizing anti-war events in the 70’s. Her passion for basic human rights for all, fairness and compassion never wavered and she could always be counted on to stand up for what she believed was right. Her kindness knew no bounds and I will remember her laughing, smiling and having a good time. Eileen - I love you, Noreen
The courage and grace that Eileen exibited during her illness and especially her final days are an inspiration to me. It is a gift to me that I got to tell her that and be there with her in the end. Eileen fought hard but is now in peace; God bless her. I love you Leenie.
