David Greene's Obituary
David E. Greene
8/21/55 – 12/30/17
David Eugene Greene was born August 21, 1955 to Clayton Greene, Sr. and his wife, the late Evelyn Virginia Greene. He was the brother of Reverend Paulette V. (Greene) Jones, Ruth A. (Greene) Allen and Judge Clayton Greene, Jr. David was the youngest of the Greene siblings and grew up in the Freetown Community of Glen Burnie, Maryland where he attended Freetown Elementary, George Fox Junior High and Northeast High schools. David attended Hall United Methodist Church regularly until he graduated from high school and moved to Winchester, Virginia for College. While a member of Halls, David was active in the Methodist Youth Fellowship and the Youth choir. He excelled in music and acting.
David was born to entertain audiences. As early as elementary school, he gave outstanding performances in numerous school plays and concerts. His love for music and the theater continued to grow as he gained more experience performing in high school and college. As a college student, David joined various music and theater groups including the Harombee Gospel Singers (an accapello group founded at Winchester College), a music fraternity and drama club. During the summer months while a student at Shenandoah College and Conservatory of Music located in Winchester, Virginia, David worked as a performer at Opry Land in Nashville, Tennessee and Kings Dominion, Virginia. Upon earning his B.S. degree in Music education, David began teaching elementary age school children in Virginia. After teaching for a year, he discovered that show business was his true calling and more fulfilling for him. He gave up elementary education and pursued a full-time career in entertainment. David secured a job with Seabourn Cruise Lines as a production vocalist on the PSL (Pride, Spirit and Legend) fleet.
At Seabourn, David progressed from the position of vocalist to Assistant Cruise Director to Cruise Director. He worked for Seabourn for more than twenty years before the discovery of his illness in February 2017. The President of Seabourn Cruise Lines had this to say upon learning of David’s passing on December 30, 2017:
[David E.] was a legend in our industry and was well loved by crew and Club members alike. Not only was he an exceptional Cruise Director, he was also an extremely talented performer, entertaining our guests on countless cruises with his iconic Nat King Cole tribute. David was the epitome of what makes Seabourn stand out; our dedicated and engaging crew. His smile, warmth and amazing sense of humor made him the ultimate host to the thousands of guests that were fortunate enough to have sailed with him. The indelible mark he left on many of us will continue his legacy as the consummate host and showman for years to come.
It is a sad day for the Seabourn family having lost one of our best and brightest who served with such character for so many years. Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts. We will miss David very much. David’s family is in the process of organizing a Memorial Service in lieu of funeral service to be held on March 25, 2018 in David’s hometown of Glen Burnie, Maryland. A public announcement will be made shortly to confirm the particulars concerning time and place for this event. Submitted by the Family
