A Local Life: Claire D Branand
Claire Branand, artist, author, wife & mother died on April 22nd in Annapolis, MD. She was born in Flushing, NY, and after surviving polio, later began a career in advertising as an Art Director at Macys in New York City.
Her mother, Clara Dostal was the first woman to be cryogenically suspended, and later laid to rest on Long Island, NY. (See article: www.alcor.org/Library/html/suspensionfailures)
She opened her own advertising agency in Washington, DC with clients including BF Saul Corp, Taubman Corp, Paine Webber, AG Edwards & Duke Ziebert's Restaurant. (Duke Ziebert's restaurant prominently displays one of her works of art).
She was commissioned to produce a work of art for the National Mining Association in Washington, DC.
She had a bi-line with the Sentinel Newspapers in Montgomery County, MD and has written articles for magazines, as well as having written hundreds of radio spots, press releases and ads over the years. She is mentioned in Who's Who of The East for outstanding achievements and Personalities of America, and is a member of the US Naval Institute and US Navy League.
She founded NAPPS, National Association of Post-Polio Syndrome, and published frequent newsletters for the survivors of polio.
She was the President of Skye Publishing, and has published 4 books: OVERBOARD! A Provacative History of the U.S.S. J. P. Kennedy, Jr., where she details her account of falling off the Naval Destroyer ship, Here's to Your Health! Cooking with Red Wine, The Butterfly and The Bear, which she also illustrated, and Getting Off by Z, which includes a picture of herself with both John Ritter & Jon Voight from a private, Washington, DC function. She is survived by here daughter, Wendy Monroy, and three grandchildren, Win Mansfield, Andre Monroy, and Clara Monroy. She will be laid to rest on Long Island, NY.
