We were both members of Belvedere YC when I first met Brooks. Both Brooks and Peggy had endless energy and dedication leading to many happy events and successful years at the club. I recall Brooks was a stickler for details, so his reports led to some late running Board meetings.
It was not long before Brooks was twisting my arm to be a club officer, something I had never imagined I would do. Suddenly in the spring of 1992, I was club chaplain, with uniform pins provided by Brooks as he drove me to something called a “Yacht Club Opening”. It was the start of an amazing adventure for Kathy and me and many wonderful memories. We both ended up serving as Commodore of Belvedere YC and went on to many other roles in the yacht club community.
His enthusiasm for the yacht club community was amazing. He was well known and warmly greeted just about everywhere he went around the Chesapeake Bay. His eventual rise to become Commodore of the Chesapeake Commodores Club in 2002 was no surprise.
In later years, when I would tell Brooks about visiting a club or port, he would invariably respond, “Oh Yes, I have been there” and relate stories about those places.
Brooks was passionate about carrying on the old traditions and protocols. He was a stickler for doing things right. It was a pleasure to learn from him and it has been my passion to honor that gift, passing the knowledge on to others.
To Peggy, Kathy and I fondly remember the many good times we shared with Brooks and you. Please know you are in our prayers and have our deepest sympathies for your loss.
To Brooks, our beloved longtime friend and shipmate, goes a heartfelt final salute and, in the words I heard you say many times as you presided over memorial services, “You have passed over the bar and on to the Sea of Tranquility. Farewell and Following Seas”.
