Our Mother
Our mother is my hero
and that I mean to say
that she was one when in a crisis
would make a way when there was no way.
Our mother was the mother of five
four boys and a girl.
And you best believe that to our mother
her children were her world.
We watched our mother as we grew with her
we didn’t always get it right
but was always a loving close knit clan
at the end of every night.
A strong black woman our mother was
very hard and stern in her love
but could be so sweet and, oh so kind,
as gentle as a dove.
She looked after others
she took them in
she loved them as her own
and no matter how crowded our house would be
her home would be their home
Our mother, she truly loved the Lord
and served him best she could.
She read her bible and she frequented church
and every Sunday our mother looked good.
Our mother, went from the project
to being the owner of her own home.
She went from cashier to director
as little as it’s known.
Our mother was very supportive to every one of us
no matter what we got ourselves into
and no matter how she fussed
she was always in our corner
no matter wrong or right
she taught us to defend ourselves
yes, she taught us how to fight.
I could go on and on about our mother
and the reasons I loved her so and I
hope with the brief glimpse into her life
you will know why she’s my hero.
Lovingly written, read and submitted
