Billy F. Moore's Obituary
Billy Fred Moore, a 2 year resident of Sunrise of Annapolis, passed away on October 17, 2014 at Mandrin House in Harwood, MD. Billy, born on August 9, 1925, was one of 11 children raised in Canton, North Carolina. He enlisted in the United States Navy at 17 and served aboard numerous ships in the Asian Theater during WW2 and the Korean War. He retired as a Senior Chief Petty Officer with 26 year’s service after traveling the world with him family. After his Naval retirement, he continued a career with the NSA for 18 years, receiving numerous awards and commendations as a cryptologist. Retirement from the NSA in 1986 gave him more opportunities to travel with his wife Sandra in her career. They lived in many states and countries and his pleasure was building homes wherever they landed.
He attended Western Carolina State Teachers College in Cullowee, North Carolina and graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in education. He also attended the Army Language School in Monterey, CA and spoke the Russian language.
Billy loved working and being outdoors. In retirement he worked for the Family Circle Tennis Center, Daniel Island, SC and Delaware State Park in Lewes, DE. He hiked on the Appalachian Trail and climbed Mt. Fuji in Japan. Not a sedentary man.
Billy loved and served his Lord, family, and country. The Bible was his greatest comfort. He had 2 daughters with his first wife, Jean Lowe Moore and helped raise 4 children with his second wife, Sandra Frasher Moore. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Moore and Lloyd and Ruth Cabe Parham; 7 brothers and sisters; wife Jean Lowe Moore; and wife Sandra Frasher Moore.
He is survived by daughters Billy Jean Mays (Arthur) and Marsha Moore Swatta (Chris); step children Robin Granofsky (Daniel), Eric Whittaker (Susan), Kent Whittaker, and Allison Looney (James); grandchildren Gregory Mays, Chip and Robert Swatta, Matthew and Alex Whittaker, Michael Geiger, Erin Davis, Jacob and Morgan Looney; sisters Winifred Henderson, and Francis Carter; brother James Parham; 6 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff of Sunrise of Annapolis and Hospice of the Chesapeake for their compassionate care.
