Alva Romaine Handy's Obituary
Alva Romaine Handy was called from labor to reward on June 19, 2022, in the comfort of her home. She was born to the parents of the Late ROBERT RANDALL, SR, AND the late ANNE PINDELL ON THE DAY THE LORD hath made OCTOBER 2, 1931, IN THE City of Baltimore Maryland. She was educated from Wiley H. Bates high school and attended Ane Arundel Community College and Morgan State College. She was employed with the Health Department, Board of Education, Anne Arundel County Jail, (Deputy Sheriff), ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCY. She also worked at ALSO EMPLOYED AT THE CROWNSVILLE STATE HOSPITAL (REHAB DEPT) She retired from the department of Social Services.
When the freedom-riders came to Annapolis, Ms. Handy was hired being the first Black Matron of the Anne Arundel County. She was also the first Black Deputy Sheriff of Anne Arundel County.
In 1943, she joined the first Black Girl-Scouts organized by the late Gaselle Markhand in Anne Arundel County.
Ms. Handy accepted the Lord and Savior Christ at an early age under the Pastor of the late Rev. C.C. Brown at Mt Olive A.M.E. church. She served God by playing for the Senior Choir and Sunday School and for the Empic League. She also served as the President of the Junior Parsonage, Senior Parsonage aid and Senior Usher board.
She enjoyed working with young people; therefore, she organized a Parole Teen club for the children in the neighborhood. She took them on trips with the Stanton Center at that time under the leadership of the Late Zastrow Simms, who also doubt with the children of Annapolis.
She JOINED PRIDE OF ANNAPOLIS TEMPLE #76 IN 1965 SERVING IN DIFFERENT STATIONS, PAST DAUGHTER RULERS COUNCIL, PAST STATE PRESIDENTS CLUB, PAST GRAND DAUGHTER RULER, TRI-STATE SECURITY, PAST COMMANDER OF UNIT #2309, AMERICAN LEGION POST #141 AND HOUSEHOLD OF RUTH 429. She volunteered AT THE GOOD SAMAITAN HOSPITAL.
Ms. Handy MOVED TO BALTIMORE AND MARRIED LATE ELMER N. HANDY ON OCTOBER 3, 1991, WHO WENT WITH GOD ON MARCH 20, 2004. She JOINED UNITED BAPTIST CHURCH UNDER THE PASTORING OF THE REV. CARL J. SOLOMON, WHERE she SERVED ON THE SENIOR USHER BOARD AND A BOOKKEEPER. LATER EARNING THE POSITION AS HONORARY MEMBER OF THE USHERS, THANKS THE LORD. When she moved back to her hometown of Annapolis Maryland, she joined Second Baptist of Annapolis Maryland under the Pastoring of the Rev. Sherard about 15 years ago. During her tennior at Second Baptist, she also served on the usher board and the hospitality committee.
Ms. Handy was proceeded in death by Daughters Teri Dorsey, Tammy Dorsey, and Thera Dorsey, (Bonus Son Stanley Dorsey) Grand Children Terika Hopkins and Don’t’a Cook SR and Grate Grand Kennedy Mooring.
Ms. Handy leaves behind four Children: Tonia Anderson (PA), Broderick Johnson (PA), Timberly Dorsey (Glen Burnie Md) and James Dorsey (Glen Burnie MD).

She leaves behind 12 Grandchildren and 20 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great, Great Grandchildren
