Willie Roger Anderson's Obituary
Willie Roger (WR) Anderson passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2017, at the age of 79. His final days were spent surrounded by his family.
WR is lovingly remembered by his son Mark Anderson and his wife Karen of Severna Park, MD and his daughter Stephanie Cochran and her husband William of Fulton, MD.
WR is predeceased by his father Elijah Shelby Anderson, his mother Lillie Isabelle Anderson and his sister Rosa Lee Sutherland.
WR loved his large family. He is survived by Cleophus Lindbergh Anderson of Lebanon, TN, Joyce Nell and Roscoe Edwards of Birchleaf, VA, Cecil Banner and Ival Anderson of Birchleaf, VA, Carolyn Sue and Richard Atteberry of Quincy, IL, Gary and Juanita Anderson of Clintwood, VA and Don and Kathy Anderson of Bristol, VA.
WR was born in Birchleaf, Virginia on May 3, 1938. He graduated from Haysi High School in 1956 and was a proud Haysi Tiger. WR then joined the US Air Force leaving Dickenson County to worlds unknown. In 1960, he started a more than 30-year career with The Southland Corporation, which owned 7-Eleven. After retiring he retired a second time from Sears. He then owned his own business using all of his carpentry talents for others throughout Calvert and Anne Arundel counties and at Chaney's Promise Farm.
On December 19, 1959, WR married Weda Anne Cochran. They spent the next 47 years building a life together. They lived in both Maryland and Virginia but eventually settled in Owings, MD near the Chesapeake Bay.
WR enjoyed music of all kinds from bluegrass to smooth jazz. His absolute favorite musician was his brother, Banner. He also enjoyed gardening, landscaping, and carpentry. He grew beautiful roses and for many years tended to his fruit orchard, which included 55 apple trees. He loved to be outside whether golfing or chopping wood for his wood stove.
Visitation will be held at Lasting Tributes, 814 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD 21401 on Tuesday, August 29 starting at 10:00. A celebration of WR’s life will follow at 11:00 with Pastor Sam Spruce officiating. Burial will be at Southern Memorial Gardens in Dunkirk, MD. A reception afterward will take place at the home of Pamela and Bruce Whitlow in Rose Haven, MD.
