William Adam Weigand's Obituary
William “Bill” Adam Weigand of Edgewater, MD passed away on February 25th, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.
Bill was born on October 26, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois to William Jacob Weigand and Anne (Cingle) Weigand. He graduated from Gage Park High School in Chicago and continued his studies at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) where he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Chemical Engineering. He went on to work at Esso Oil Company in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He eventually decided to return to IIT to earn his PhD in Chemical Engineering. For the next 45 years, Bill worked as a Professor of Chemical Engineering at Purdue University, IIT, and University of Maryland, College Park, where he ended his career. He also worked as a Program Director and grant reviewer for the National Science Foundation.
Bill married the love of his life, Gazella, who he affectionately referred to as his “Queen” in Chicago, Illinois. He loved to tell the story of how they met at a dance at Saint Rosa Lima church in Chicago followed by his famous quote of; “As soon as I met her, I knew I couldn't let her go”. With his wife, Bill really enjoyed exploring new places and traveling the world. He was an avid skier and enjoyed many ski trips with the Fleet Wind Ski Club of Chicago, and the Pentagon Ski Club of Washington DC. Bill and his wife also loved attending many cultural events such as theater and musical performances. Being a part of a variety of groups, (art, gourmet cooking, bird watching, and exercise to name a few) was something they loved to do together, and it kept them quite busy
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Gazella (Polinski) Weigand, his daughter Corinne Weigand (Cheryl) Baltimore MD, his daughter Christie Dinan of Merrimac, MA, his granddaughter Kayla Dinan of Merrimac, MA , his sister Mary Ann Fell of LaPorte IN, his brother Tom Weigand (Irene) of Chapin, SC, his sister-in-law Suzanne Graal, (Terrence) of Palos heights IL, two nephews, two nieces and several great nephews and nieces.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Shriners Children’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Bill was passionate about donating to Shriners because his daughter has worked for 19 years in the Pediatric Burn Unit. Shriners Children's Hospital
