William Joseph Campbell's Obituary
William Campbell, age 88, died on April 27, 2015. He is survived by his wife Betty of Annapolis, MD; daughter Susan Davis (m Jeffrey Davis of Swanton, MD), son John Campbell (m Carla Reinhard of Damascus, MD); grandchildren Eli Davis (Bend Oregon); Chelsea Davis (NYC, NY); and Kerry and Katherine Campbell (Baltimore, MD). He was pre-deceased by his grandson Zachary Davis. In addition he leaves many nieces and nephews and their families who loved him dearly.
Bill was born in Washington, DC on July 31,1926, to the late Cora and Joseph Campbell. He attended Maryland Park High School in Capital Heights, MD and graduated in 1943. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the Navy and spent 3 years as a Navy Corpsman. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1950 with a BS in physical chemistry and he received his PhD in physical chemistry in 1955 from the University of Maryland. During and after graduate school he worked for the US Bureau of Mines as a research chemist. He was later appointed the Director of Research for the Bureau and retained that position for nine years until the Center was closed. He received many special awards during his years of working but he was always quiet about them.
Bill was a great family man and a loving father and grandfather. He and his wife recently celebrated 68 years of marriage. He was a golfer and tennis player from age 16 until 2 years before his death; he also loved playing pickle ball.
Internment will be private. A special public remembrance will be held at a later date to be announced.
