Passed on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at his home in Odenton, MD. Father of; a daughter Vivian Thurman of Washington D.C.; a son Larry Thurman of Austin, TX; a son Paul Thurman of Yorktown, VA; and a son Michael Thurman of Washington D.C.. He is also survived by several brothers and sisters, many cousins, nieces and nephews, his long-time boyhood friend Ed Barnes and his best friend of many years Karen Johnson. MSgt Thurman was a Vietnam Veteran who served over 26 years in the USAF at various locations including the Pentagon and overseas tours in the Philippines, Japan and Spain. After retirement from the military he returned to Government service at the National Security Agency eventually retiring with more than 45 years of total service to his country. MSgt Thurman was born in Birmingham, AL and joined the military at age 17. He was a man of many interests & talents to include cooking and politics, but was often found working on many home projects at the same time while pursuing other adventures. He had a great affinity for travel, learning, reading and especially foreign languages. Fluent in Japanese he also taught English at Tokyo University while stationed in Japan. A funeral service with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund or the Air Force Memorial Foundation.
