Wanda Aletha Overmyer's Obituary
Wanda Aletha Overmyer (née Tomlinson), formerly of Camp Hill, PA, and more recently of Edgewater, MD, died peacefully surrounded by her family on May 9, 2016. She was 88 years old.
Wanda is survived by her daughter, Leslie Overmyer-Day and son-in-law, W. Keller Day, Jr., of Dunkirk, MD; grandchildren Heather Wilson, Kelsey Day, and Halie Day; and three great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her son, Richard Overmyer of Hartford City, IN.
Wanda was born at home on January 18, 1928 in Hartford City, IN to Ray and Dorothy Tomlinson (Morris). She graduated from Hartford City High School in 1945 and attended Ball State, studying fashion and interior design. She married twice, to Richard Frahm, and Loring Overmyer. Both precede her in death. During her lifetime, Wanda lived in St. Joseph, MI, Grand Rapids, MI, St. Cloud, MN, and Camp Hill, PA, before moving to her daughter’s home late in life. She enjoyed many friends in every location she lived.
Wanda worked as a telephone operator for Indiana Bell, an interior decorator, and home maker. After retiring she became involved in many initiatives to improve the lives of others in her community. She led the organization of residents to obtain federal funding to build a sound wall along route 581 in Camp Hill; was instrumental in establishing Promise Place, a half-way house for women transitioning from prison; was active with Planned Parenthood Keystone; served as escort coordinator at Hillcrest Women’s Medical Center; and actively advocated to protect women’s access to healthcare.
Wanda was creative and artistic in many ways. She was an avid painter and seamstress, and she loved music and dance. She passed along her creativity and love of art to her children and grandchildren.
Baptized as a teen, she lived her faith and was an active and dedicated member of churches in the communities where she lived. She considered Market Square her “home,” and was involved in the church until late in life.
Wanda will be remembered as a creative and caring friend, a loving mother and grandmother, and a leader in the communities in which she lived.
A memorial and reception is planned for Saturday, June 18 at 11:00 a.m. at Market Square Presbyterian Church, Harrisburg, PA. Her remains will be inurned in the church’s columbarium. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Wanda’s life. Condolences can be sent to 6309 Johns Lane, Dunkirk MD 20754.
