Vinnia Belle Haskins' Obituary
Vinnia Belle Haskins (Vina or Vonnie) passed away on November 26, 2014 at the age of 84.
Vinnia was born April 4, 1930 in Little Plymouth, VA (King & Queen County). The daughter of Henry (Hoskins) Haskins and Catherine Ross. After graduating from Beverly Allen High School, West Point, VA in 1948 Vinnia spent most of her life in Annapolis, Maryland where she obtained a State Board of Cosmetologists license as a Senior Cosmetologist. She practiced as a Master in her craft with the Charlene – Marie Beauty Salon in Eastport working with her dear friend and Proprietor who preceded her in death; Ms. Adell Walker for over 30 years.
While practicing for many years as an artist in the trade of cosmetology, Vinnia had a strong skill with math and numbers as well as the arts. She often took numerous craft classes and created stone works, and paintings as personal gratifications of expression of the arts. She loved animals and cared for a number of animals over her years even those of her Great niece, Wikita (Key) when she frequented her home. While Vinnia never married, she was preceded in death by her partner of 30 years, Mr. William Downs (Sonny).
When Vinnia was first diagnosed with cancer in 2005, she refused to accept the diagnosis and trusted and believed in God for her healing and survived the disease just shy of 10 years. She had numerous Doctors who were supportive through the years of treatment, her fondest being Dr. Charles Adamo and Dr. Jeanine Werner. She often spoke fondly of the two of them after a visitation which became more frequent towards the end.
Vinnia never complained of pain. She approached life with bravery and endurance. She inspired everyone in her life to live laugh whole heartedly after all, she liked to tell and listen to stories, and make light of every day pressures. She would keep us all laughing up to the end.
Vinnia was predeceased by her parents Henry and Catherine Haskins as well as 9 sisters and 3 brothers: Nettie Williams, Bertha Ross, Leah Ross, Nannie Mae Burse, Martha Williams, Pearl Dailey, H. Elizabeth Harris, Pricilla Haskins, Lizzie Muse, Franklin Haskins, Elvin Haskins and Sam Haskins. Vinnia leaves to cherish her memory: her devoted goddaughter and great niece Wikita E. Stegman (Spouse – Bradley), godson James “Poochie” Brown (Monica), nieces Gertrude Bonita “Gheri” Belt (Marvin) and Virgie Polly Byrd (raised together); great nephew John E. Hoffman (Catherine “Nikki”), great niece Caryn Adinig (Sean) a caring health care provider Martina (Bias), Reverend Dr. Charles M. Walker, Charlene Catlin, a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, additional family members and friends, all whom she loved.
If Vinnia were here to speak to us she would remind each of us to trust in God, be patient with each other, and be kind to animals.
