Stephen Douglas Mitchell's Obituary
Stephen Douglas Mitchell, president and founder of Appropriate Technical Resources, Inc, died Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at Harbor Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
Steve was born January 14, 1951, to Doug and Doris Mitchell, in Baltimore. He held a degree in biomedical engineering from George Washington University and founded ATR, Inc in 1980. His decades-long career took him across the country and globe to manufacture and sell biomedical research equipment, “in the service of science.” ATR, Inc was proud to be honored as the US industry leading specialist for mammalian cell culture in shake flask.
In addition to his career in biomedical engineering, Mitchell was a talented musician and guitarist. His other passions included travel, his dogs, the beach, and cars. Funny, whip-smart, and empathetic, Steve made friends wherever he went. A life is impossible to summarize in words. Steve’s is more aptly summarized in the lives he touched: his family, friends, and colleagues.
He is survived by his wife, Laurie Jane Mitchell; three children, Stephen Mitchell, Jr., Samantha Mitchell and Ryan Mitchell; and six grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Bauer, Sasha, Ronin, Sagan, and Marion. He is also survived by his sister, Sue Hickman, and his nieces and nephews.
The family has suggested that memorial donations could be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Maryland SPCA.
