Stanley Platt Gary's Obituary
Stan was born July 10, 1925 in the Bronx in New York City to Garabed Bedrosian and Ruby Horton. His name at birth was Stanley Platt Bedrosian. For business reasons, sometime during the late 30’s his father changed his last name to Gary, the anglicized version of his Armenian first name. Stan attended Phillips Exeter Academy, and then the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating from there in 1946.
During his 30-year navy career, Stan served in various positions aboard a destroyer, a patrol craft, a minesweeper, and a battleship. As commanding officer of the minesweeper during the Korean War, Stan received the Silver Star medal, two Bronze Star medals, and the Presidential Unit Citation. Subsequent assignments included student at the Naval Post Graduate School, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, MIT, where he earned a Master of Science degree, and various positions in navy head quarters in D. C., the White Sands Missile Range, and the Naval Ordnance Station, Indian Head, MD. He retired from the Navy in 1976 as a Captain. He also earned his MBA degree after retiring from the Navy.
In retirement, Stan worked for years as a consultant, did volunteer tax preparation work, drove for Meals on Wheels, and bought an airplane to enjoy his favorite hobby of flying. Most of his final years were spent in a condo at a fly-in community in Florida.
Stan’s wife of 63 years, the former Marie Anna Giddings and love of his life, died in 2015. He is survived by his children Barbara G. Citterbart of Cold Spring Harbor, NY and Donald D. Gary of Lewisville, Texas, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Memorial services will be held in the summer followed by inurnment with his beloved Marie in the Naval Academy Columbarium.
