Sandor John Kontor's Obituary
Sandor John Kontor
April 2, 1942 – September 15, 2025
It is with love and sadness that we share the passing of Sandor John Kontor, age 83, in Annapolis, Maryland. A dedicated husband, father, and grandfather who always put family first, Sandor will be remembered for his intelligence, his devoted care of his beloved wife Juliette, and his openness toward all, whether lifelong friends or new acquaintances.
Born in Budapest, Hungary, Sandor immigrated to the United States in 1956 at age 14 with his mother and younger brother as a refugee in the aftermath of the Hungarian Revolution. They settled in Connecticut, where he built a life of hard work and purpose. He supported himself through hands-on work at a bowling alley and as a gardener, then put himself through community college. He later attended the University of Rhode Island, where he earned his engineering degree.
Sandor became a licensed professional engineer and enjoyed a distinguished career with CDM Smith, rising to Senior Vice President and managing major water treatment projects across the United States.
He married his soulmate, Juliette, in 1964, and together they raised their son John and daughter Susan in Rhode Island. In addition to his wife and children, he leaves behind his daughter-in-law Debbie; his son-in-law Brad; his grandchildren Tori, Morgan, Lillie, and Alden, along with their spouses Jordan, Tim, and Corinne; his sister Sandi; his sister-in-law Judy; as well as his nieces and nephews, and his extended family in Hungary. He was preceded in death by his mother Teresa; his father Istvan; and his brothers Attila and Edward.
To his grandchildren, Sandor was “Papa,” a name even family friends and neighbors came to use. Everyone loved Papa, and he will be deeply missed.
