Rose Hannagan's Obituary
Rose Hannagan, of Grasonville, MD died Tuesday, November 29, 2011, at home surrounded by her loving family. She was 105 years old.
Rose was born in Lawrence, MA the second child of Polish immigrant mill workers. She attended school in Lawrence. She eventually married Joseph T. Hannagan, also of Lawrence, MA and they had three children together. One of their children died in infancy.
Rose spent several decades herself working in a shoe mill in Lawrence until she retired in the late 1960’s. After that she spent time traveling with her husband and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She never hesitated to help out with her family in any way she could. She spent at least one summer working at her son’s restaurant in New Hampshire baking pies which reportedly became locally renowned. In her nineties she worked in her grandson’s gourmet deli in Charlottesville, VA, again becoming somewhat of a local phenomenon. She was the favorite baby sitter of her grandchildren. In her retirement Grandma Rose became an avid quilter. All of her quilting was done without a sewing machine. She also enjoyed crocheting and made scores of items for her family members and some others that were donated to church raffles, etc. She liked to help out with housework and gardening until the last year or so of her life. Rose was proud of her Polish heritage and would always get a big smile when her grandson would tell her he loved her in Polish. She enjoyed the company of the family’s two dogs.
Rose’s husband died in the late 1980’s after which she spent more time living with her daughter Eileen and son in law Joseph Walsh. They moved to Grasonville, MD in 2000.
She was preceded in death by her two sisters Emily Verbicky and Sadie Rogers, and her brother Donald Suda, all from Massachusetts.
She is survived by her daughter Eileen Hannagan Walsh of Grasonville, MD, her son Joseph T. Hannagan, Jr. of Bristol, NH. She is also survived by seven grandchildren Linda Walsh of Arnold, MD, Joseph Walsh, Jr. of Sarasota, FL, Thomas Walsh of Queenstown, MD, James Walsh of Suwanee, GA, Joseph T. Hannagan, III of Bristol, NH, Richard Hannagan of Hill, NH, and Theresa Boardman, of Gilford, NH. Rose is survived by 18 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.
