Robert C. Smith's Obituary
Robert C. Smith (Bob), 66, of Annapolis, MD, died peacefully on October 11, 2013 at Mandrin In-patient Care Hospice after an 18 year battle with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Bob was born in Ridley Park, PA, to George T. Smith Sr. and Dora Landis Smith. He graduated from St. James High School, and became a co-op student at Drexel University (Phi Beta Kappa) in Philadelphia, and the David Taylor Naval Research and Development Center in Annapolis. Bob received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering and continued at DTNRDC, receiving several patents and awards and attaining the status of Senior Scientist before the Center was closed. He went on to work as Senior Scientist for Ultra Electronics, Vector Research, Alion and was still employed by BMT – SynTek at the time of his death.
Bob met Dianne Andrew, formerly of Owings Mills and Centreville, MD, when both were performing at Summer Garden Theater in Annapolis. They were married April 8, 1978 at St. Anne’s Church in Annapolis. Together they enjoyed many years working with both Summer Garden and Colonial Players theaters. Bob may be remembered as the pirate Captain in C.P.’s “Cabaret for Kids” shows. They also enjoyed sailing, traveling, and had many adventures in the U.S. and abroad.
Concerned about the environment, Bob joined the Severn River Assoc. and later was appointed chairman of the Severn River Commission. He was on the committee for the Jan Hollman Environmental Education Award for many years. Bob enjoyed woodturning and was a member of the Chesapeake Woodturners, creating and displaying his art at MFA and other venues.
Bob is survived by his loving wife, Dianne; sister, Anne Wall (Rick), St. Johns, FL; brothers, Jim Smith (Pat) Swedesboro, NJ, and George Smith Jr. (Gini DeRosa), Aston, PA; brother-in-law, Jim Anderson (Janet Cromer), Bethesda, MD; and sister-in-law, Betty Andrew Horvath (Bruce), Easton, MD; as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews; goddaughter, Heather Dianne Smith (Jeff), Louisville, KY; and close friends Edd, Tom, and Sally. He was predeceased by his sister Theresa Anderson, formerly of Bethesda, MD.
