I just began researching our family history and stumbled across this article. Unfortunately, I never knew Capt. Lowery, but I hope someone documented this man’s impressive life. Wow. Most respect, Melissa

Erica, Steve and Carlyn~~ was sorry and saddened to hear of the passing of my former NMCB 133 Commanding Officer. Dick was one of my first CEC officers I worked for after my transfer into the Civil Engineer Corps from the Surface Warfare Community. He accepted me as his Operations Officer early and I could not have asked for a better leader and mentor. I could say more but let me just add, I was a better Naval Officer and a better individual because of the time I spent with Captain Richard Lowery.
My thoughts and prayers are with you as you navigate through this sad time.
And Erica — thank you for your kindness and friendship to me during our 133 time and afterwards.

Erica, Steve and Carlyn— I was saddened and sorry to hear of the passing of my former NMCB 133 Commanding Officer. Dick was one of the first CEC Officers I worked for after my transfer into the CEC from the Surface Warfare Community. He accepted me as his OPS Officer early and I could not have asked for a better leader and mentor. I could go on but let me just say- I was a better Naval Officer and a better individual because of the time I spent with Captain Richard Lowery.
And Erica- thank you for all the kindness you showed me during our 133 time and afterwards.
My prayers and condolences as you navigate through this sad occasion.

I have known Dick and Erica since 1966 when we were sent to Annapolis for active Duty having just completed graduate school at Michigan. They were among the first people we met and welcomed us to Annapolis. Through them we learned to love the Chesapeake Bay and sailing in particular. Although we lost touch through the years, recently it has been nice to welcome Erica to the Naval Academy Garden Club.

I’m forever grateful to CAPT Lowery. When I was a Midshipman, he patiently told me about the CEC and encouraged me to apply, and later advised me to take my first orders to Yokosuka. That advice was among the best I’ve ever received, and his personal time, interest and support, were examples for me of how leaders should take care of people that I’ve tried to follow. Thank you, and rest in peace, Captain Lowery.
My husband, Len, and I have loved and enjoyed Dick for many years. His was always ready with a joke and could tell them with much aplomb. He helped with almost any project as his skills were vast. We also loved sailing with Dick and Erica over the years. We are both sad to hear this news. Dale Adler
