Raymond Charles Spence's Obituary
Raymond Charles Spence of Annapolis, Maryland and Bethany Beach, Delaware passed away on November 18, 2017 at the age of 92. Born in Alleghany County, Pennsylvania on April 14, 1925, Ray joined the Army at the age of 18. He was a veteran of WWII serving with the 10th Mountain Division HQ 85. After WWII, Ray separated from the Army to join the United States Air Force. Ray was an aircrew member during the Berlin Airlift. He performed the duties of radio operator.
Ray was a cartographer and photo-grammetrist for Defense Mapping Agency and NOAA.
He was an active member of the Lions Club for 32 years. He was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Award, recognized for his humanitarianism and community service. Ray was a man who always helped others and instilled in his children the value of community service. Even into his 90’s, Ray was helping his fellow residents at his assisted living home.
Ray loved Summer days at the beach. Every summer for 53 years he enjoyed being with his family at South Bethany Beach. He was an organist, enjoying music from the 40’s and 50’s.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Dorthea E. Spence. He is survived by his 4 children, Patricia Byers (Pete), of Kingman, AZ, John Spence (Melinda) of West River, MD, Donald Spence (Denise) of Ijamsville, MD and Orrin Spence (Cathy) of Brunswick, MD. Grandchildren, Warren Adams-Ockrassa (Suzanne), Donald Spence, Jr. (Bethany), Jonathan Spence (Amy), Elizabeth Arenas, Cole Spence and Heather Spence. Great Grandchildren, Alessandro Arenas, Tyson Spence, Eric Spence, Cameron Spence, Steven Spence and Inge Adams-Ockrassa. Ray is also survived by his companion Nancy Brubaker of Ocean View, DE.
A celebration of Ray’s life will take place at Mid Atlantic Community Church, 2485 Davidsonville Road, Gambrills, MD 21054 on Friday, December 1, 2017. Family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 PM with the funeral service at 2:00 PM. Donations may be made to Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care, 5457 Twin Knolls Road, Suite 100 Columbia, MD 21045.
