Raymond C. Simanowith's Obituary
Raymond Charles Simanowith, 80, passed away peacefully at home in Annapolis, Maryland, on the morning of April 26, 2025, surrounded by family. The cause was congestive heart failure.
Born on January 4, 1945, in Queens, New York, Ray was the son of Evelyn (née Seubert) and George Simanowith. At age thirteen, his family moved to Langhorne, Pennsylvania, where he attended Bishop Egan High School and played sousaphone in the marching band. A dedicated and gifted student, Ray earned a math scholarship to St. Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania, before transferring to Drexel University. He graduated in 1967 after completing a co-op at the David Taylor Research Center in Annapolis, where he contributed to early computer software engineering for the U.S. Navy.
Ray continued his work at David Taylor after graduation and earned a master’s degree in Numerical Science and Physics from Johns Hopkins University in 1973. Annapolis became his lifelong home. He served as president of the Broadneck Jaycees during the bicentennial year and was editor and contributor to the book, Broadneck: Maryland’s Historic Peninsula.
After leaving David Taylor following fourteen years of service, Ray held engineering leadership roles at Gould Electronics, Lockheed Martin, Oracle Complex Systems, and Ecologic/Datazen—where he worked on software for the Exxon Valdez cleanup. He retired from Raytheon Systems in 2011.
Ray found joy in retirement through tennis, world travel with his wife Linda, and spirited card games and mini-golf competitions with family at their Bethany Beach condo. His heart was his family; especially all his grandchildren, who he entertained and delighted with jokes and welcomed the chance to introduce mathematics into their lives.
Close friends of Ray's will treasure the memory of his easy impish smile, his fierce but good-natured competitiveness. His enthusiastic style and contagious laugh made for an excellent traveling companion while having some memorable adventures through Spain, Portugal, driving through Central Europe, sailing a 42 foot yacht out of the BVI's and finessing the canals and locks of Southern France.
He is survived by his beloved wife of thirty-nine years, Linda (née Cosgrave); sons Michael (Charnell) and Mark (Jill); stepchildren Jessica Paulsen (Erin Wallace) and Dan Paulsen; grandchildren Lexie McArdle-Ogden (Austin), Megan, Evan, Luke, Juliette, Finn, Callum, and Cora; a great-grandchild expected in October. He also leaves his brother Gerry Simanowith, extended family, and ex-wife and friend,Toni Punzavitz.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Ray’s caregivers, Vida and Biddy.
A funeral Mass will be held Friday, May 9 at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew by the Bay Catholic Church, 701College Parkway in Annapolis. Interment will be private.
