Peggy Springer Holmes' Obituary
Peggy May Springer died peacefully in Annapolis, Maryland on May 22, 2019 at the age of 85. Peggy was an incredibly talented woman, an accomplished seamstress, scrap-booker, domino player, hostess of family gatherings, and wonderful mother, “nana”, and friend. However, her favorite activities were the ones that involved her family and friends. Peggy’s greatest joys in life were always the people that she shared her life with; something she did openly. She always made time to enjoy and spoil her five grandchildren and more recently, her two great grandchildren. She had a wide circle of friends she kept up her entire life relishing her time with them. She looked forward to seeing “her girls” during her weekly domino games. Peggy had many roles in life, daughter, sister, wife, businesswoman, friend, but her best and favorite role was Mother.
Lester and Annie Springer welcomed Peggy, their first child, into their family on February 28, 1934 on their tenant farm in Hanock County, Ohio. Peggy was followed by her twin siblings, John and Jeanette in December of 1937. The family worked the farm together until their father took a job in the town of Findley, Ohio. Peggy graduated from Van Buren High School, in 1952. She met her future husband, Edward L Holmes at the Bakers farm. When Eddie was drafted into the service they married on January 20, 1953 before he departed.
Peggy moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 1953, while Eddie was in Korea, and took employment at Time Finance. Upon Eddie’s return in 1954 they lived in Brooklyn, Maryland and had their first of three children, Bradley M. Holmes in 1955. Bradley was followed by Timothy “Kevin” Holmes in June of 1962, and the late Stephen P. Holmes in May of 1967. Peggy was a dedicated and wonderful mother to her three sons. In addition, she had a successful career at Westinghouse Electric. She worked her way up from line worker to become the first female Divisional Manager at the Westinghouse BWI complex. Simultaneously, while being a working mother of three, she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Maryland in 1978.
Westinghouse was where Peggy met her second husband, Clyde “Bud” Green; they were married on April 22, 1978 in Crofton, Maryland. They were a dedicated and loving couple, who entertained a wide circle of family and friends. They traveled extensively both as a couple and with their family. Bud and Peggy hosted an annual family vacation of a week of golf at Myrtle Beach for many years and then later a family week at the Outer Banks where many wonderful family memories were made. Peggy and Bud retired in Annapolis, Maryland and continued to enjoy an active life together. Bud preceded her in death in 2014 and Peggy continued to entertain friends and family in their Annapolis home until her last few months.
Peggy was preceded in death by her Husband, Bud Green; Parents, Lester and Annie Springer; Siblings, John Springer and Jeanette Hall; and her youngest Son, Stephen Holmes. She is survived by Sons Bradley and Kevin; her Daughters-in-law Tammie Holmes; five grandchildren, Melissa, Hayley, Drew, Matthew and Joshua; and two great grandchildren, Eli and Stevie Harper. She leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews.
Peggy’s wishes were to be cremated and buried with her beloved husband, Bud, in Maryland’s Veteran Cemetery. A memorial is scheduled for 1:00 pm on June 29, 2019 at Lasting Tributes in Annapolis, MD. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Peggy's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to American Cancer Society.
