Patricia Murphy Gayne's Obituary
Patricia Murphy Gayne passed away peacefully in her home in Annapolis surrounded by her loved ones after a year-long battle with stage 4 lung cancer. She was 71.
Patti was known for making every person she encountered feel at peace with themselves. She was passionate about helping others, practicing Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism, and supporting animal rights.
Patti was born on October 30, 1951 to Patricia Cox Murphy and Julian George Murphy in Washington, D.C. After Patti graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School (now named Jackson-Reed) in 1969, she met her future husband and the father of her children, Jeffrey, while vacationing in Jamaica. Jeff’s father Homer Gayne was on assignment at the time as U.S. Cultural Affairs Attaché.
Patti and her husband Jeffrey Austin Gayne had two daughters: Alison K. Gayne and Hayley H.N. Gayne. Patti served countless families for over 30 years in the Domestic Relations Division of Anne Arundel County. She worked with the court systems as a Support Officer, being promoted to Program Manager later in her career. In 2018, Patti Gayne retired to spend more time caring for her mother.
Patti was predeceased by her husband Jeff in 2002, as well as her parents, and her youngest brother John Edward Murphy. She is survived by her daughters Alison and Hayley, her son-in-law Brandon Jones, her sisters Pam Terrell and Grace Murphy, her brothers Robert Murphy II and Thomas Murphy, her grandchildren Seneca Gayne-Gordon and Alaya Jones, and nieces and nephews.
In the last days of her life, Patti was keen to enjoy nature and music. She was frequently smiling and full of grace, always making the most of her time. Her sense of humor, vast love for her family, and determination to live life on her own terms up until the end was truly an incredible sight to behold.
Services will be held at Myosenji temple on July 22nd at 2:00 pm. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, anyone desiring to support the family may email Alison and Hayley at: [email protected]
