Norman "Doug" McGowans' Obituary
Norman Douglas McGowans, lovingly known as Doug or Mouse Head, departed this life peacefully on Wednesday, September 28, 2022 at the Doctors Community Hospital in Lanham, MD. He was born on December 11, 1949 at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD to the late John P. McGowans and Alice J. McGowans.
He attended Parole Elementary School and graduated from the Annapolis Senior High School, Class of 1967 where he played basketball with the Annapolis Panthers. This is where he acquired the name Mouse Head.
Doug attended Cecil Memorial United Methodist Church at an early age. Mouse began studying the “Bible” at the Heritage Harbour Health and Rehab center where he was a resident for the past 11 years.
He was drafted into the United States Army in May of 1969 receiving numerous service medals and badges to include the Vietnam Service Medal and the Purple Heart. Mouse was honorably discharged in May of 1975 as he became disabled in combat.
Mouse was an avid sports fan. The Pittsburgh Steelers was his favorite football team. Mouse once coached the Annapolis Crusaders youth football team. His hobbies were basketball when he could still play as well as bowling. He also loved playing bingo with the residents at the Heritage Harbour Health and Rehab center. Lottery scratch-offs was one of his favorite past times.
Uncle Doug was very involved with his nieces and nephews. Always spoiling them. Although he had no children of his own, he played the father role to each and every one of his nieces and nephews. He chose Pam as his caretaker and she obliged.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Randolph “Randy” McGowans, Sister, Mary “Puddin” Moulden and great-nephew, Xavier “Rocky” Mackell, Jr.
Norman leaves to cherish his memories, loving brother, John “Brother” McGowans (Norma); sisters, Jeanette “Pat” Whittington (Charles) and Edna McGowans; Nephews, John “Man” McGowans, Juan Herndon (Brena) and Elrod McGowans; Nieces, Esther Snowden, Janet Boston and Pamela Powell-Kerrick (Shelby); great nephews, Elrod, Jr. and JaQuon; great nieces, Keonna, Lakia, Jasmin, Tynesha, Yesenia, Yazmine and Kenya; a host of great-great nephews and nieces; Bonus sons, Delmar Turner and Frankie Johnson, Jr.; Devoted Friends, Ty Johnson, Elliott “Poncho” Cook, Michael Hicks, Lester Evans and a host of cousins and friends.
