Naomi Elliott's Obituary
Naomi Elaine Jones Elliott was born to the late Bradley Jones and the late Blanche C. Johnson on November 9, 1935. She departed this life on April 6, 2013 at the age of 77 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center after a brief illness.
Naomi attended Stanton Elementary School and Wiley H. Bates High School in Anne Arundel County. At an early age, she joined First Baptist Church in Annapolis, MD. Then, she moved to Washington, DC, where she joined Gethsemane Baptist Church. She also attended United Brethren for Christ in Baltimore, MD and Church of Redeemer Ministry in Arnold, MD.
In her early years, Naomi was employed as a barmaid at Allsups, Cozy Cabin, and Turks Club. She was also employed at the Provident Center in Arnold, MD for 12½ years, then at Crownsville Hospital Center in Crownsville, MD for 12 years, and later, to National Hospital Center in Washington, DC where she retired.
Naomi was a member of Pride of Annapolis Temple #76, Elizabeth A. Carter Council, and Order of Eastern Star Marion Chapter #24.
Naomi was a family-oriented person. She loved to cook, play cards, watch game shows, do word puzzles, talk on the telephone, and read her bible.
Naomi is preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, Elmer Elliott, who died in January 2009; two daughters, Sharon McGowan and Cosandra Johnson; one son, Derwinn McGowan; two brothers, Milton Colbert and Isaiah Powell; and one grandson, Steve E. Holland, Jr. She leaves to mourn, five devoted children: Theresa McGowan of Odenton, MD, Louis McGowan (Darlene) of Annapolis, MD, Reginald McGowan of Edgewater, MD, Dorcell Holland of Glen Burnie, MD, and Kelvin McGowan (Yolanda) of Glen Burnie, MD, and one adopted son, Brian James of New York; 28 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great-grandchildren; five sisters: Marjorie Gross (Edward) of Arnold, MD, Mary Hutton of Annapolis, MD, Evelyn Brown of Indian Head, MD, Geraldine Cully of Baltimore, MD, and Delores Crockett of Milwaukee, WI; one brother: Sidney Ferguson of Upper Marlboro, MD; one step-brother: Melvin Johnson of New York; two brothers-in-law; three sisters in law; a very special cousin who was like a sister, Betty Pierce of Cleveland, OH; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
