Nancy Virginia Prichard Morgan's Obituary
Surrounded by her family through the end, Nancy Virginia Pritchard Morgan of Ginger Cove, Annapolis, Maryland, passed away peacefully, on November 30, 2022, after suffering a stroke. She was 99 years young.
Nancy is survived by her children, Anne Morgan Hatcher of Annapolis, Maryland, John Walter Morgan of Georgetown, South Carolina, and Katherine “Kathy” Morgan Owens of Warrenton, Virginia. She had five grandchildren, Kathleen Hatcher Mooneyhan of Annapolis, Maryland, Jennifer Marie Shipp of Annapolis, Maryland, William “Billy” Morgan Owens of Davidsonville, Maryland, John “Jay” Thompson Morgan of Merritt Island, Florida and Bradley Douglas Morgan of Annapolis, Maryland. She also had four great grandchildren, Allison Marie Shipp, Maxwell George Shipp, Arthur Morgan and Jackson Morgan.
Born in 1923, in Redfield, South Dakota, Nancy’s family moved to Burbank, California, when she was a little girl where her father became an editor with the Los Angeles Times. Nancy attended Westlake School for Girls in West Los Angeles and graduated with a degree in Chemistry from Scripps College, Claremont, California, in 1944.
On April 24, 1944, Nancy married Lt. Cmdr. Harry “Tick” Morgan, U.S. Coast Guard, in Los Angeles, California. Tick and Nancy were introduced by Nancy’s older brother, John, who was Tick’s best friend from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. John said; “I am saving Nancy for Tick, and Tick for Nancy.” They raised their three children in a variety of locations, transferring to new adventures whenever the U.S. Coast Guard sent new orders for Tick. They were stationed in San Diego, Hawaii, Philadelphia, Portland, Maine, San Francisco, Seattle, Hawaii (a second time), London and finally, Washington, DC, where Tick retired at the rank of Captain.
Nancy and Tick built a beautiful waterfront retirement home on the Eastern Shore of Maryland where they enjoyed boating, tennis, their dogs, playing Bridge, church activities at Centreville United Methodist Church and spending time with family and friends. They were also instrumental in establishing a local chapter of the Humane Society. In 1980, they moved to Siesta Key, and then Sarasota, Florida. They often talked about their grand adventure traveling by their boat, the “Nantick,” from the Chesapeake Bay, through the Intercoastal Waterway, across Lake Okeechobee, and to their new canal-side home on Idlewild Way on Siesta Key. In Florida, they continued to enjoy retirement life, fun in the sun, boating, friends and volunteer work at Siesta Key Chapel, where Nancy was a member of the bell choir. They also took up playing golf together. Nancy became so proficient at the game, that she achieved a lifetime total of three holes-in-one!
After Tick’s passing in 2004, Nancy moved to the beautiful community of Ginger Cove in Annapolis, Maryland to be closer to family. At Ginger Cove, Nancy met the second love of her life, William “Bill” Krause. They shared a special relationship, and friends and family attended their touching commitment ceremony in September 2007. Nancy and Bill enjoyed traveling together, and all of the activities and amenities of Ginger Cove, including croquet, where they both became very competitive in their league. They were both member of the U.S. Croquet Association and had handicaps. Some of their proudest moments in croquet were beating “The Middies” and “The Johnnie’s” at the annual Ginger Cove vs. U.S. Naval Academy and St. Johns College matches.
Nancy will be remembered by her family as; someone who loved her family above all, as the proud wife of a Coast Guard Officer, a strong advocate for her children, for her singing of hymns and show tunes around the house and piano playing, a lover of animals and the outdoors, an organized schedule keeper, a lover of theater and avid reader, a fun Grandmother to spend summers with, an active lady, a competitive sports and game player, a gracious loser and winner, someone who had a bright smile whenever she was with her family, a lover of a good cocktail, an impressive counted cross stitcher, as a woman who knew what she wanted and rarely hesitated to share that with others, a fierce tennis doubles competitor who won several seniors tournaments, as a Great-Grammy who was fun to play games with including cards, shuffleboard, croquet and “Wii,” as someone who made holidays feel extra special (even when we had to sing “Happy Birthday” to baby Jesus).
Nancy had several favorite Bible verses, including: Micah 6:8, Isaiah 40:28-31 and Psalm 15:10-12. And some of her favorite hymns are: “Spirit of God, Descend Upon my Heart,” “Breathe on my Breath of God,” “Beneath the Cross of Jesus,” and “How Great Thou Art.”
The family expresses gratitude to the community of amazing people that is Ginger Cove and the caring staff at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
