Michael Joseph Murphy's Obituary
Michael Joseph Murphy, age 67, of Annapolis, MD passed away on November 1, 2020, among his Sunrise Senior Living family where he resided for 11 years. They cared for him beautifully, especially in his final days.
Born March 19, 1953 in Reading, PA to Thomas & Eleanor Murphy, he lived most of his life in Philadelphia. At the tender age of 4 yrs., he underwent brain surgery and radiation therapy for a cancerous tumor. He miraculously survived, but the radiation profoundly affected his health in his 40’s and thereafter.
Michael enjoyed many sports in his youth, including biking, hiking, karate and cross-country skiing. He was even on the ROTC drill team in his early college years. He graduated from LaSalle College with a degree in Political Science.
He worked for the Dept. of Veterans of Affairs in Phila. for 30 years until he suffered a serious head injury in 2005 and then retired on a disability. His younger sister moved him to Annapolis for rehab in 2007.
Michael has been a source of strength and determination to his family and friends. He had a strong desire for independence despite his physical limitations and deafness. He did his best to stay strong and participate in various activities in his assisted living community, especially the spiritual events, such as Catholic mass, the rosary group and bible studies. His faith in God sustained him throughout his physical struggles all these years, and now he has a glorious new body.
Michael is survived by his sisters, Mary Anne Mancillas of Gambrills, MD and Sheila Norton of Longmeadow, MA. Private interment will occur in the family plot near Phila., PA. Due to COVID, the Celebration of Life will be held sometime next Spring.
