Michael John Murphy's Obituary
Michael John Murphy, affectionately known as “Murph”, a former Marine, Baltimore City Police Officer, Business and Restaurant owner, and much loved bartender died unexpectedly on February 18, 2015 in his residence at Mallard Lakes, Delaware. Murph was 68.
He was born to William and May Murphy in Baltimore, MD. Murph attended Saint Mary’s School in Govans and graduated from Baltimore City College. After high school, Murph joined the United States Marine Corps, stationed in North Carolina and honorably discharged. Murph worked for the Baltimore City Police Department where he patrolled the Northeastern District of Baltimore City and as a detective in Eastern District.
Murph and a business partner opened the Irish Derby Tavern on York Road near Belvedere Avenue. They also managed the New York Deli and the Tom Jones Restaurant. In 1999 Mr. Murphy moved to Fenwick Island Delaware area and made it his home. His charm and wit enabled him to make friends wherever he went. Over the years he managed, catered, and bartended at various restaurants and watering holes in the area. At the time of his death, Murph was working at Scotty’s Bayside Tavern in Fenwick Island, DE.
Murph is survived by his daughter, Brooke Murphy Poindexter, and son in-law Doug, of Annapolis, two granddaughters, Abigail and Avery Poindexter. He is also survived by four siblings: two sisters, Vallee Lang and MaryEllen Christopher, and two brothers William/Bill and John Murphy.
A Memorial Mass will be held at Saint John Neumann Roman Catholic Church on Friday, February 27th at 10:30 AM. The church is located at 620 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD 21401
