Meta Maisha Moulden's Obituary
Annapolis native Meta Maisha Moulden passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 21, 2025. She was 50 years old.
Born December 2, 1974 to Deborah Ann Sumler and George Moulden, both of Annapolis, Meta grew up on Obery Court among a large, extended, close-knit family. She often said that as an only child, she felt fortunate to be surrounded by many loving relatives, especially her grandmother, Mary Evelyn Sumler, and aunt, Joyce Sumler.
Upon graduating from Annapolis High School in 1993, Meta began her career in food service and was employed by the U.S. Naval Academy’s Dry Dock restaurant where she served midshipmen and their families for more than 20 years. She later earned her certification as a nurse’s assistant from Anne Arundel Community College and transitioned into the healthcare sector, serving as a caregiver for the elderly.
A funny, charismatic and caring soul, Meta—lovingly nicknamed “Meta Mo” and “Too Short”—was a vibrant presence wherever she went. She was known for coming up with funny catchphrases that she would randomly throw into conversations just to make people laugh. She used to say “Fourth Ward make you famous,” no matter what the conversation was about, and delighted at the quizzical looks and laughter she would receive.
During her career as a caregiver, Meta served elderly and disabled clients, many of whom considered her part of their family. She treated everyone with extraordinary patience, love and respect, and provided the kind of care that went far beyond her basic duties. Meta even found ways to engage and entertain her dementia patients who were otherwise non-verbal. She was a natural caregiver and, although it was difficult work, she felt she had found her true calling in her later career.
Meta is survived by her greatest treasures, her two sons, Akeem Dorsey and Daronja Smith, as well as her granddaughter, Ryleigh Dorsey. She is also survived by her mother, Deborah Ann Sumler, and half-siblings Christine (Moulden) Buggs; Thomas Moulden; Erdina (Moulden) Wright; Zelda Moulden; Carroll Moulden; Ronald Moulden; and Leona Moulden. She is also survived by a dear friend, Charmaine Thomas, whom she considered a sister.
Family and friends are invited for visitation on Friday, September 5 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Lasting Tributes, 814 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD. Her Homegoing Service will begin at 11 a.m.
