When I joined the Loyola Swim Team in 1963,my freshman year, Marty was already a legend, his legacy still fresh in the minds of my older teammates. I had the pleasure of knowing his younger brother, Tom in highschool. It was many years later that I met Marty at a swim team alumni function. What a great guy. From that day on whenever the Seadogs got together, he offered me the same friendship he shared with the guys he knew from the old days. I admired him for his strong character, leadership qualities and warm friendship. Rest in Peace Marty. You ran a winning race and I am proud to have known you.
Marty and I swam at Loyola College 1959-1963. We were co-captains in the 62-63 season. He was no doubt the best all-around swimmer during our time together. He was also an All-American lacrosse player. He was truly a great athlete. Later he went on to serve his country in the Army. Then he applied his harbor and marine terminal management skills to solve problems related to our nation’s supply chain.
We lost track of each other after graduation in 1963 but thankfully got back together in the late ‘90s and had the pleasure of meeting Sue. We have been great friends since. Marty will be missed by many. May he Rest in Peace.
