Madeline Cadwell Hooper's Obituary
Madeline C. Hooper, 99, of Annapolis, MD passed away on July 9, 2016 at AAMC.
Madeline was born in Baltimore, MD, the only child of Cardiff and Marie Stapf Cadwell. She lived in Baltimore and in North and South Carolina during elementary school. She attended Gwynn Falls Junior High in Baltimore where she won a gold medal for best female scholar. She graduated from Western High School in Baltimore in 1935. Madeline met the love of her life, Zenus Barnum Hooper, at age sixteen. They were married on June 19, 1937 and had two children. They lived in Lochearn in Baltimore County for 38 years, and later in life resided in Towson. They spent summers on the Severn River in Annapolis. Madeline spent her final 7 1/2 years in assisted living at Atria Manresa in Annapolis and briefly at Riva Terrace II.
Madeline was a devout and active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Baltimore from birth thru age 86 when she could no longer drive. She worked in retail sales in Baltimore in the late 1930’s and again from 1958-1968 while her children were in college and medical school. She attended college classes at Catonsville Community College, earning A’s.
Madeline enjoyed volunteering for the Salvation Army, and for hospitals in Towson (GBMC) and Annapolis (AAMC). She was an accomplished singer, seamstress, avid reader, redecorator, boater and devotee of aerobic exercise. She loved being with her grandchildren and great grandchildren and her many friends of 75 years. Madeline and Zenus traveled the U.S. and to more than 25 foreign countries.
Madeline was predeceased by her husband, parents and son in law, Richard McKelvie. She is survived by her son, Dr. Stephen L. Hooper (Gail) of Hawaii; daughter, Carol Hooper McKelvie of Annapolis; grandchildren, Christopher Hooper (Athena) of Denver and Josh Hooper (Sonia), Shawn McKelvie (Patti) and Heather McKelvie Bostian (Dave) all of Annapolis; great grandchildren, Casey and Kaelan Bostian; Lachlan and Grady Hooper; Makenna, Logan and Jax Hooper; and Justin (Nikki) and Katie Watson.
A visitation will be held at Lasting Tributes Cremation & Funeral Care 814 Bestgate Rd. Annapolis, MD 21401 on Friday, July 15th between the hours of 10:00 am to 10:30 am, with a funeral service to follow at 10:30am. A committal ceremony will be held 2:30 at Lorraine Park Cemetery, Baltimore, MD.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
