Louis Bernstein's Obituary
Louis Bernstein of Utica, NY, Roanoke, VA and most recently of Stevensville, MD, died September 23, 2013, a day before his 90th birthday with his family by his side at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis. He is finally reunited with is wife, Sheila and at peace.
He was born on September 24, 1923 in Utica, NY to the late George and Dorothy Bernstein. After graduating from UFA, he enlisted in the Army Air Force and became a radio operator on B-17’s during WWII. He was honorably discharged as a captain and returned home to Utica.
On August 25, 1946, he married Sheila Blackstone making Utica, NY their home until 1998. Louis owned and operated Herkimer Electronics, retiring around 1988, when he began working with his son-in-law’s business, Touch of Class Carpentry. In 1998, Lou’s wife took ill and they decided to move closer to family in Roanoke, VA where she died months later. Lou was never quite the same. In the last year of his life he lived with his daughter, Marla and her husband, Frank, moving to Stevensville, MD in 2013.
Louis enjoyed his dog, Shelly, boating, tennis, playing Frisbee with his grandchildren, carpentry and gardening.
He is survived by two daughters, Marla Spring of Stevensville, MD, and Lynne Thunderstorm of B.C. Canada, grandchildren Dr. Gabriel Spring of Charlottesville, VA, Dr. Noah Spring of Indianapolis, IN, Leaf, Raven and Fox Thunderstorm of B.C. Canada, one sister, Loretta Einstein of New Hartford, NY; and two great-grandchildren, Asia and Taran of Canada. He was predeceased by four siblings.
Thank you to Dr. A. Patel and Dr. Weinstein, patient advocate, Janet, and to Catherine Casey. Special thanks to the nurses of the 3rd floor critical care unit at AAMC, especially to “Ruthie” who supported us in his final hours.
A gathering of friends and family will take place at 3616 Derby Drive, Roanoke, VA 24012 on Saturday evening, October 5th at 6:30PM. A short graveside service will be held at the Temple Emanuel Cemetery on Orange Avenue at 2PM on Sunday, October 6th.
