I had the privilege of working with and getting to know Len as a volunteer at the AAMC Emergency Department for nearly ten years. I was assigned as the new "young" guy with two long tenured gentlemen and always deferred to his mentoring during these years. Len was a very interesting conversationalist and created many rich relationships with all levels of staff and volunteers....but he did not usually "suffer fools" along the way !
Reflective of his outlook on life and most impressive was his unwavering battle with his illnesses over the past few years. I saw the many ups and downs during this period and never did he speak of anything other than the next step in recovery...and he succeeded many times !!! I saw him the night before he died and only then did he share, with a smile, that he was "going home"...was not sure what he meant but for the first tiime sensed that he was ready to leave this world and was assuring me (and others) that he was now comfortable with that outcome.
Len will be missed by many...my best to Irene and the rest of his family that his legacy will be a rich source of strength going forward in their lives.
Irene and family, All Our Deepest Sympathy. He was great friend and mentor to many of us. We spent alot of times together over the years and he will be truly be missed. Here is a photo of Len welcoming friends to our USCG Station Annapolis open house in 2015.
Len will be missed by the members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the active duty Coast Guard. He trained many members of both organizations for watchstanding duty. Those who worked closely with him always benefitted by his guidance and experience.
We have an Auxiliary saying that he has "passed over the bar". which means he has gone from troubled water to calm seas. .Clear sailing Len!
