Kimberly Deshawn Nelson's Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Kimberly Deshawn Nelson, a strong, sacrificing, and unconditionally loving woman. Born a native of Birmingham, Alabama, she spent her life in service to others—ten years in the United States Navy, followed by a career in IT and computer programming at Walter Reed. Later, her selfless nature led her to in-home health care, where she devoted herself to caring for her disabled son while, at the same time, raising her two other sons as a single mother.
She fought courageously with breast cancer for over six years and most recently with brain cancer. Despite every challenge, she remained strong, never allowing what she was experiencing to define her. She kept on offering love to family and community, always putting others first.
She was a devoted mother of three, a compassionate sister, and a highly regarded friend to many. Her generosity knew no limits—she volunteered every year in toy and clothing drive campaigns, always seeking opportunities to assist those less fortunate. In addition to her charitable ways, she spread energy and happiness. Music was her passion—her favorite artist was Prince—and her fixation on the color purple earned her the nickname "The Purple Princess." Christmas was her favorite holiday, one during which she was most happy sharing love and kindness.
Kimberly is greatly missed by her loving children, William Christopher Nelson and Jordan Alexander Nelson; her loved family members, and numerous friends who were blessed to have known her. Even though she is no longer with us physically, the lasting impression of her love, kindness, and strength will remain in the hearts of all those blessed to have known her.
She will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
