When I was about ten, I took my first solo trip to go to a summer camp in North Carolina that I had begged my parents to send me to. Aunt Kay volunteered to pick me up at the airport, and let me stay with her until it was time to drive me to camp (eight hours round trip!). I was nervous, awkward, and shy, but Aunt Kay was so kind and gentle with me, that I quickly came out of my shell and had the chance to enjoy a few days with her before camp started. Those few days I spent hanging out and chatting with Aunt Kay was the best part of my camp experience and a memory I will always cherish.

I only met Kay a few times, but they left a lasting impression. Her most notable characteristic for me was her sweetness. She had such a sweet aura about her that touched everyone she made contact with. She made a lasting impression for sure. Her sweet nature is reflected in the awesome children she raised: Anne, Joe and Monica.
Rest In Peace, Kay, and heaven just got a little sweeter with your arrival.

What a wonderful sister she was both as a child and as an adult. So many wonderful memories, for example, remembering Kay walking around the farm house on her tiptoes, always so serious and insightful . And all the great discussions we had about what we were both reading at the time, always with something interesting to say. And the wonderful but all to Brief times we spent together in Florida. Will miss her every day.

I had the great privilege of getting to know Kay and "the kids" in Chapel Hill when I was in graduate school at UNC in the mid-70s. It was for only about 2 years, but I remember those times so well and fondly. They all brought family warmth into my new student life there. Kay was so nice to me. Kay and our mom Ann O'Keeffe Gadek were very close, kindred spirits. We send our heartfelt condolences to you, Anne, Monica, and Joe. My wife - Monyi - got to meet Kay and Joe during a visit to Chapel Hill in the late 80s I think it was. All very warm memories of her. Joe and Monyi Gadek @ Kilimanjaro

When Kay was ten, she was assigned by our mom to help take care of the new baby--me. I still remember her giving me baths in a dishpan on the diningroom table. As a little kid, I went to her for a lot. When I was seven, we had a terrific thunderstorm in the middle of the night. I ran to her room and got in bed with her. I remember how warm she was. When she got up at 5:30 to milk the cows, she was very surprised to find me there. Eileen is only a year younger than me, and was assigned to Betsy. Because we were so close in age, we were always together. I have many memories of Kay and Betsy taking care of us, especially playing with us outside and in the barn. Across the road from the house was a massive Maple tree, one of many in a row. Kay could often be found up in the crotch of that tree, reading a book.

I remember Aunt Kay as a extra bright light. I remember meeting her and Joe, Anne and Monica on the farm. One of my first memories and later as an adult meeting with her in Florida with my parents, her visit, with George (the last time I saw him) to see my sister in her final days and my last visit, stopping at her house on a very windy day about two years ago. I wish I could be there this weekend and send all my cousins lots of love during this difficult time. Brian O'Keeffe

I thought of Kay as my sister. She was married for many years to my brother Denny. She was kind and thoughtful, gentle, beautiful and full of grace. I will always miss her until we meet again in heaven.
