Katherine Joyce's Obituary
Katherine Arthur Joyce, 99, peacefully departed this life on June 4, 2021 at her home in Annapolis, Maryland. She was born, November 27, 1921 to the late James Arthur and Jannie Butler in Parole, MD where she spent her childhood.
Katherine attended Parole Elementary and Whiley H. Bates High School. She worked at Fort Meade as a Seamstress. She worked as Secretary at Asbury Broadneck United Methodist Church. She attended Beauty Culture School for the Study of Cosmetology. This led her to a career in Cosmetology. After continuing her education at American College in Washington, DC, Katherine became a Nurse. Assistant at the Public Health Hospital, then transferred to DC Children Center in Laurel, MD where she served as Supervisor.
Katherine was full of life and loved being with friends and family. She was known to host celebrations and family events at her home. For many years, she planned summer bus trips throughout the United States for family and friends. Her favorite trip was her week’s stay in Martha’s Vineyard, a Massachusetts Island, just south of Cape Cod.
Katherine had a deeply rooted love for her community. She was a member of The Pride of Annapolis Temple Independent Order of Good Samaritan Lodge, Raven Roost #35, Just Friends Social Club, Investment Club, and served as President of The Sylmar Community Association.
Katherine Joyce was married to the late Charlie W. Joyce for 29 years. She was preceded in death by 10 siblings: Ethel, Gertrude, Helen, Ruby, James, Elijah, Lloyd, Minnie, Corena, Lillian and two children: Latitia D. Jones and Carl A. Gray.
Katherine leaves behind to cherish her memory her beloved children: Daughters-Cynthia Robinson, Christine Brown, Althea Williams, all of Baltimore, MD., Belinda Gray of Millersville, MD, Marsha Brown (Clifton) of Bowie, MD, Shirley Russ (adopted) of North Carolina. Sons- John Simms (Oretha), of Upper Marlboro, MD., William Gray (Cathy) of Glen Burnie, 18 grandchildren, 52 great grandchildren, 55 great great grandchildren, Sister-in-law, Josephine Joyce of West Virginia and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family and friends.
