Remarks from Ginny Jones on Saturday, May 14 at Kathy's Service:
Good morning! I’m Ginny Wheeler Jones.
Kathy was my friend for a LONG time. We went to Western High School , an all girls public school in Baltimore together, so we’ve known each other since 1959—and the math says that’s 62 years of friendship.
One of my fondest memories from those high school days is that Kathy’s parents were brave and kind enough to host an “after prom party” for some of us as we graduated in 1962.
Kathy and I became better friends in later years. We worked on several Western reunions together. Several of us kept in close touch over the years. A group of 4 of us (Brenda Rahm Schwaab, Doreen Rothman Silber - neither of whom could be here in person today- Kathy and I) began gathering yearly for our own “mini reunions” . With only 2 exceptions, those special gatherings continued for 27 years, including last October. In those outings, Kathy was always my roommate for our overnight adventures.
Kathy was a multi-faceted friend, with many strengths:
- She was a “real estate advisor”— Kathy loved Annapolis and was eager for Charlie and me to have a home in Annapolis! She knew the area well and had honest and helpful advice as we looked and chose a place. She loved our final choice— a condo at “Acton’s Landing”, the downtown site of the old hospital.
- She was a “personal shopper”— Kathy loved going to “Estate Sales”! She often found Naval Academy items just “perfect” for us in our Annapolis home. Sometimes they were “secret” gifts she chose for one of us to give the other!
- She was a “Social Director”— Kathy loved her social outings with friends in the Annapolis area. She introduced me to the “New Annapolitans” and their “Fun Lunch” group. We shared fun times at those lunches together, both of us making new friends at these events. Kathy also knew the best restaurants! The servers soon knew she loved lemons! She introduced us to “Carroll’s Creek”, perhaps her favorite restaurant. We met there often, including times with another Western High School friend, Pat Kehoe Tylander and husband, Ty (who are here today).
-She was a “ Hospitality and Celebrations Queen”— Kathy loved to entertain! She loved to cook and was great at collecting and especially sharing favorite recipes. Some of us have benefitted by getting a binder of her favorite recipes… definitely an item to treasure. As a fellow former elementary school teacher, I enjoyed that Kathy loved decorating and entertaining by various “themes”. As you visited, you always knew what holiday it was!
In connection with this..
- Kathy was “a giver”— She loved sharing birthdays and special holidays, including providing thoughtful, GENEROUS and wonderful gifts. Like many of you, Charlie and I have many items from our birthday and holiday celebrations with her and Dick to continue to provide us with MANY fond memories of Kathy.
- She was a “Care provider”—We all know that in recent years Kathy had been a loving care-giver to Dick… not always an easy task. However, Kathy has been there as a caring friend to me, and others, as we had health issues… and we are most grateful.
We all miss Kathy greatly and have many fond memories of the wonderful, multiple aspects of her life.
*However, the best memory of Kathy is simply as a best friend.
