Karen Calhoun Morgan's Obituary
Karen Florence Calhoun Morgan died on July 7, 2013. Born on March 10, 1939, in Newark, New Jersey, she grew up in places as varied as Minneapolis, Coral Gables, Emporia, Denver, and Miami. Her father, Charles Howard (Cal) Calhoun, was an executive of Continental Airlines and moved frequently. She graduated from Colorado Women’s College in 1959 and, on June 5, 1959, married Joseph D. Morgan III, a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy.
Karen’s childhood prepared her well for life in the military. While it might be a stretch to say she loved moving as often as she did (with 4 children, a cat or two and a dog in one car, across country as often as not), it is certainly true she deeply loved the many friends she made. These enduring friendships were a highlight of her life and provided much comfort and joy. During her life, she volunteered countless hours with base hospitals, as a Girl Scout leader and then worked in the private sector.
In 1986 Karen received a kidney transplant for which she was extremely grateful. This transplant provided her with another 27 years of life during which she saw the birth of all her grandchildren and enjoyed a number of trips to Europe, especially Italy, with friends.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Joseph David (Joe) Morgan III of Annapolis, Maryland, daughter and son-in-law Laurie Ann (Morgan) Gallagher and Mark Keith Gallagher, and their children Christopher Keith Gallagher and Kathryn Morgan Gallagher of Dedham, Massachusetts, daughter Leslie Jean Morgan (formerly Miller) and her daughter Emma Braxton Miller of Richmond, Virginia, and her son and daughter-in-law Scott Hunter and Kathleen (Fromnic) Morgan and their children Emily Anne Morgan and Joseph David Morgan V, of Limerick, Pennsylvania. Karen was preceded in death by her mother Mildred Francis Calhoun, her dear 19 year old son, Joseph D. Morgan IV, her brother Calvin Calhoun and her father Charles Howard (Cal) Calhoun.
Her memorial service and burial will be private.
Donations may be made in her memory to the National Kidney Foundation, the American Leukemia Society or Hospice of the Chesapeake.
