Joseph Jewell's Obituary
Joseph Pierce Jewell born on December 11, 1920 to Bertha Agnes and Joseph Henry Jewell Jr. in a house in the middle of what is now Solomon’s Island Rd. and West St Annapolis. He was the 8th child of 5 boys and 3 girls. Many knew him as “Shorty” or “Bip”. His father passed when he was 14, being a faithful son helped support the family by working in various jobs.
He met Veda Virginia Craft just before going off to WWII. Joe “Bip” Jewell enlisted into the Naval Reserve in 1942. He served as an electrician on board the USS Gosselin (The Gray Goose). The Gosselin was the first ship into Tokyo Harbor, Japan to transport war correspondence, Admiral Halsey’ saddle which Admiral Halsey later used to ride the emperor’s white horse, and later transported freed Allie POW’s. Joe wrote to Virginia during the war and 6 months after being discharged in 1945 they were married on July 20, 1946.
After, WWII Joe worked for George Bowan and the Naval Academy as an electrician until laid off.
With much prayer Joe and Virginia started Jewell Electric Co. in 1953. They grew the business until retirement in 1985. Joe and Virginia turned the business over to their two sons James and Robert Jewell continuing the legacy. Robert has since retired.
Joseph and Virginia were faithful members of the Glen Burnie Church of God now the Heritage Community Church. Joseph served on the finance board for many years.
Joseph and Virginia were very happily married for 66 years. Their legacy is continued by their 2 sons James and Robert Jewell and Daughter Katherine Klinger; their 5 grandchildren, Lisa Moylan, Jaime Tucker, Ellen Hale, Julie Sullivan and Joseph Klinger; their 8 great-grandchildren, Madison, Emily, Margaret, Vida, Alexander, Patrick, Payton, Jonah and their 2 step great-grandchildren, Teaghan and Kiestyn.
Joseph Jewell “Bip” too many, “Pop” to his family will always be remembered for his green thumb (What a garden), hard work, kindness, his big smile and loud laugh, faithfulness to his wife and family, his singing of hymns, and most importantly his life lived true to his faith in GOD “I Am”.
Joe's favorite sayings were “You make your bed you sleep in it” “I am blessed by God for all I have been given.” When asked what is important he always said, “Be honest no matter what and trust in GOD.”
I would just like to say that it was an honor and a privilege to have known, loved and cared for my parents all these years. I thank GOD for giving me parents that were kind and caring mentors throughout life and devoted Christians. Although, death is the end of life in this world it is really only just the beginning of the journey of life with GOD for those who trust and believe in Christ. At this time of the year we are reminded of the gift God the Father gave us, the Christ child. Please take a moment to examine your life and the Gifts God has given you so that you may continue life's journey once your life in this world has ended. In Loving Memory of Joseph P. Jewell from your loving and faithful daughter Katherine V. Klinger.
