John B. Harmon's Obituary
John Bernard Harmon, Jr. passed away on September 27, 2013 at his home in Annapolis, Maryland after a courageous 9 year battle with kidney cancer.
Born in Washington, DC on July 24, 1933 to Matilda Wise Harmon and John Bernard Harmon, Sr., John was known to family and close friends by his childhood nickname “Bunce.” He attended St. Michael’s School in Silver Spring and Gonzaga High School, graduating from Blair High School in 1952. Drafted into the Army in 1953, John was honorably discharged from the Army Signal Corps in 1955.
The Army introduced John to the fascinating world of electrical engineering. He attended the University of Maryland and the Capitol Radio and Engineering Institute, earning an Associate’s Degree in Applied Electronics. John went to work for the Federal Government at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC. He spent the next 40 years at his dream job, returning as a contractor after his retirement from Federal service.
John leaves his beloved wife, Patricia Coughlan Donovan, and 8 stepdaughters, Teresa Donovan, Cece Donovan (Dave Greene), Bridget Kennedy (Chris Kennedy), Maureen Donovan, Becky Donovan (Ed Isaacoff), Mary Donovan, Jennifer Donovan, Allison Boettinger (Mark Boettinger) and 8 grandchildren as well as a host of extended family and friends.
John was a Master Gardener and an avid amateur golfer. He enjoyed target practice at the Twelfth Precinct Pistol Club in Harwood, Maryland and he loved to fish. Interment will be a private family service. Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of John’s Life on Sunday, October 13th at 1:00 p.m. at Friendship Hall in Ginger Cove, 4000 River Crescent Drive, Annapolis, Maryland 21401.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s memory to the Support Kidney Cancer Research of Dr. Michael Carducci at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, 100 North Charles Street, Suite 234, Baltimore, Maryland, 21201.
