John Robert Hamlin's Obituary
John Robert Hamlin, 86, of Annapolis, passed away on July 27, 2026.
Born on May 8, 1940 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, John was the son of Robert and Bernis (née Bivins) Hamlin. After graduating from the University of Oklahoma in 1962 with a degree in Journalism, he proudly served in the United States Army from 1962 to1965. Following his military service, John continued his commitment to serving his country through his work with the United States Department of Defense at the National Security Agency (NSA).
John was known for his intelligence, unique sense of humor, and lifelong curiosity. An avid reader, he found great enjoyment in books and built an extensive personal library over the years. While he had a particular passion for history, his collection reflected his broad interests and appreciation for many subjects, including art, poetry, and more. He rarely went far without a book or two by his side. He and his wife, Margaret, shared a love of travel, enjoying adventures both close to home and across the country, as well as international journeys that created many treasured memories. John also cherished the quieter moments at home, where he could often be found relaxing with Margaret, watching an old movie and enjoying a martini. Some of John's happiest moments were spent on summer beach vacations with his wife and children. He also had a special affection for his dogs over the years, whose companionship brought him great comfort and joy.
John is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Warner; his children, Amanda Scheps (Erik), Adam Hamlin, Leslie Warner, and Tracy Warner (Jason Harding); his grandchildren, Sophie, Hannah, and Estella; and his sister, Jane Netherton (Nick). He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Bernis Hamlin; his sister, Linda Russin; and his brother, Steve Hamlin.
A private service will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to an organization of your choice.
